Introduction

Concepcion Hernandez Mendez, a lawyer and an anthropologist, is working to provide legal training to Indigenous leaders and community groups and also to help them achieve greater legal autonomy. In so doing, she hopes to develop their capacity to handle their own legal issues and to encourage the larger Mexican legal system to interact with these communities in more culturally appropriate and acceptable ways.
