Ashoka in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
Ashoka is the first global network of leading social entrepreneurs pursuing the vision of an “everyone a changemaker”. We are delighted to announce an inaugural cohort of seven Ashoka Fellows in the DRC who will be joining our network of 500 Fellows in 23 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. With a population of almost 100 million inhabitants and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, the DRC is the second most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria and the largest French-speaking country in Africa. 65% of the population is under 25 years old, and according to the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers report, over 40% of the world's extremely poor people may live in the DRC and Nigeria by 2050.
Our 40 years of experience have shown that systems-change social entrepreneurs are a powerful driving force for inclusive social and economic development, yet they need an ecosystem of support to help them thrive and scale their impact.
Social entrepreneurs are a key force. In the depths of their hearts, they are committed, themselves and their work, to the general interest."
