Observing Ramadan while being young Muslims in Canada
This sacred month, during which it is forbidden to eat, drink, smoke, or have sexual relations from dawn to sunset, is for them an opportunity for introspection and togetherness. Attached to this ritual by belief or tradition, they see it as a choice, not an obligation. Student Hannène Mankour, comedian Reda Saoui, author Asmaa Ibnouzahir, and rapper Webster explain to Catherine Perrin why they love Ramadan. “It’s a bit like a Zumba class,” says Hannène Mankour. “When there are a lot of people doing Zumba together, you feel like the time goes by much faster and you have a lot more fun. [...] When everyone around you is fasting, even if you don't see the others, it really creates a wonderful atmosphere.”
