Empathy in Action: How Eunice Omojola is Closing the Digital Divide

“I came from a public-school background, so I understand how it feels not to have ICT classes and not to be digitally informed.”

This experience fuels Eunice’s mission to change the narrative for students like her.

Eunice Omojola is a young changemaker from Nigeria tackling the digital literacy gap in unserved and underserved communities.

Changemaker’s Journey

Coming from an underserved community herself, where she lacked access to digital skills in secondary school, Eunice took it upon herself to create learning opportunities for young people in similar situations, empowering them to become digitally literate.

She became acutely aware of this digital divide whenever she interacted with students from schools where digital literacy was the norm. This stark contrast inspired her to bridge the gap, leading to the birth of TechinEdu

Her first step in bringing her vision to life was forming a team. She effectively communicated her mission to six young people who now make up her dream team.

Through partnerships and collaborations with established organisations, Eunice has been able to scale her initiative, making a tangible impact on STEM education and digital literacy. Public schools that Tech in Edu has reached out to have been supportive, granting her team the opportunity to educate and empower their students.

The Initiative

Tech in Edu is focused on providing STEM education and digital literacy to young people, particularly in underserved communities.

“The goal that we have is to ensure every child is carried along,” Eunice says.

Eunice achieves this by offering training in 21st-century digital skills through online workshops, mentorship sessions, hands-on activities, and physical outreaches—reaching both students and out-of-school children. Her mission is not just to teach technical skills but to help young people see how they can merge their interests with tech to create meaningful change.

A major challenge her initiative faces is the lack of power supply and communication equipment in many public schools. Training students in such environments is difficult, as they are often not conducive to learning. Other challenges include reluctant students and network issues that affect online sessions.

Impact

Tech in Edu is gradually closing the digital divide between public and private schools through well-curated STEM lessons and digital literacy outreaches. The initiative has empowered numerous students with essential digital skills, equipping them with tools to thrive in today’s digital world.

Future Aspirations

“As a changemaker, I aspire to bring educational equity.”

Eunice believes that educational equality is not enough. Offering the same learning platforms to both marginalised and urban students overlooks their different realities. Instead, she champions educational equity, where support and resources are tailored to students’ unique needs.

She envisions expanding STEM and digital literacy education to more underserved schools, narrowing the gap between public and private education. She also aims to light the path for young people who are passionate about tech but unsure where to begin.

“We also hope that we’ll be able to empower young people that no matter what their passion or interest is, they can always merge it with tech,” she says.

Everyone a Changemaker

“Empathy is very important for any changemaker.”

Eunice believes that one cannot effectively solve a problem without understanding or having experienced it firsthand. Her strong sense of empathy remains a driving force behind her remarkable achievements.

Her advice to aspiring changemakers: Start afraid.

“All you need is a strong ‘why,’ a team that believes in your vision, and trust in yourself.”

She also emphasises the importance of credibility, as it strengthens your ability to communicate your mission and align others with it.

“I believe everyone needs to be a changemaker, because there will be fewer problems and more solutions. Being a changemaker helps you recognise the value of one in one million.”
