For any woman in an abusive relationship, the economic angle is just another devastating form of control.

Meseret Haileyesus is the CEO of the Canadian Center for Women’s Empowerment (CCFWE), a non-profit dedicated to ending economic abuse through education, policy change, mentorship and financial empowerment.

She explains that economic abuse is all about control and manipulation. It’s not just ruining someone’s financial status or taking their money, but can also include preventing education, job training or other means to self-reliance and improved economic status.
