About Catarina
With CatMat, Catarina seeks to democratize mathematics and show that there is space for Black girls in the field of STEM
Catarina is a high school student from São Paulo who turned her early struggles with math into motivation to make the subject more accessible and engaging, especially for girls and Black students. In 2020, she founded CatMat.
Matemática, a digital project on YouTube and Instagram that uses simple language, pop culture references, and relatable examples to demystify math and promote representation in STEM. The initiative has already reached nearly 40,000 subscribers on YouTube and over 19,000 followers on Instagram, with students, parents, and teachers reporting significant changes in how they relate to math.
CatMat is not only reshaping the way math is taught but also inspiring confidence, interest, and a sense of belonging among underrepresented youth. With future plans to expand into video lessons, workshops, and printed materials, Catarina is building a powerful movement that combines educational impact with youth leadership and social inclusion.
