After William Faulkner lost his job, he spent his last paycheque on getting a carrier for his cat, Bella. The 24-year-old may be struggling, living under a bridge with only sleeping bags and blankets to stave off the winter chill, but the health and well-being of his two-year-old kitty is top priority. “She is my child. She’s my baby,” said Faulkner, affectionately stroking Bella’s shiny grey fur. “And if you ask any of the other youth around here with pets, they’ll say the same thing.” Faulkner was just one of dozens of people who streamed in through the doors of Directions Youth Services in downtown Vancouver Sunday, cats and dogs in tow, for the One Health clinic.
